A Little History of CryoFacial Treatment

The beginnings of cryotherapy date all the way back to Ancient Egypt where ice baths were used to calm inflammation and help aid the healing process for several different ailments. Modern day cryotherapy is credited to the work of Dr. Yamaguchi of Japan, as well as a couple other brilliant minds in Germany and Poland. In the late 1970s, Dr. Yamaguchi proved through several studies that a more superficial cold experience was superior versus a deep tissue ice bath experience. Thus, modern day Cryosaunas were born which utilize cold nitrogen gas to instantly cool the body causing a rise in the release of endorphins among other benefits. This has been used in the medical and alternative medicine world for many different purposes and only in the past 5-10 years has this technology been applied for cosmetic purposes.

Some spas and Cryo centers use cold gas to spray the face. And others, like us, use a safer, more effective, and more relaxing CryoFacial method. This True CryoFacial delivers instant and lasting benefits, especially with proper maintenance. Our True CryoFacial originates in Italy with the CryoSkin 3.0 machine, which a company called Artemis Distribution brought over to the US in 2017. We received our machine in 2019 and perfected the art of the CryoFacial to what it is today. Only a handful of practitioners actually perform the True CryoFacial that we do here at Royalty by Rachael Holistic MedSpa.

How Does It Work?

The CryoFacial works by using a handheld Cryo wand to massage and sculpt the face with a very precise range of temperatures and patterns. Too warm doesn’t elicit a change and too cold can cause damage, so we monitor our temperature constantly as we perform our CryoFacials to give you the maximum benefit possible. Just the right temperature makes the dermis think that an injury is happening even though no injury is actually occurring. This causes the skin to start producing high quality collagen more rapidly to repair a potential injury. Since we are evenly treating the whole face and neck, collagen is laid in an even distribution all over the treated area leading to a softening of fine lines & wrinkles, more elasticity & tightening, and an overall more youthful appearance. The cold temperatures also calm inflammation, and the gentle movements help the lymph fluids drain, resulting in less puffiness in the eyes and face as well.

We use a specific pattern that aids in gently lifting the skin and helping the lymph fluids exit properly. We also use just the right amount of gentle pressure, because we have proven time and time again that less is more. There is no need to push too hard. It is very relaxing.

We take our CryoFacial a step further and use special organic and wild-crafted cleansers and serums that pull toxins out of the skin and infuse the skin with powerful ingredients to target your unique needs. This leaves your skin buttery smooth and glowing when you leave. Our techniques and ingredients also help your skin continue to repair itself in the weeks that follow your CryoFacial. Repeated treatments as well as a solid at-home regimen will ensure that you are completely happy with your results.

Targeted Areas

We always target the neck, chin, jawline, nasolabial areas, cheeks, lips, under eyes, and forehead with special emphasis on the areas you want us to target most. One side of the face and neck is treated at a time for 10-12 minutes each followed by a massage and detoxifying facial.

What is a CryoFacial Good or?

CryoFacials help reduce the appearance of many different skin issues such as fine lines & wrinkles, sagging skin, rosacea, inflammation, puffiness, and pore size. “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

Your esthetician will help you determine how many CryoFacials you may need to achieve your goals.

Can Cryotherapy Ease Pain and Migraine?

While we do not market the CryoFacial specifically for pain, patients have reported that it does help ease headaches and migraines. No one likes to miss their CryoFacial due to pain, so most opt to come in even if they have a headache. If you have a migraine, consult your doctor before receiving a CryoFacial to make sure it is safe for you.

Things to Expect During a Session

When you come in for your first CryoFacial, we will do a proper assessment as well as take before and after photos so you can see the immediate difference in your skin. During every session, you can expect to be fully relaxed with calming music and aromatherapy and be comfortable on our incredibly cozy massage beds. Our electric beds can be adjusted to your comfort level as well, which is amazing for those who have back pain, neck pain, restless legs, or any other aches and pains. We will leave you for a few minutes to change into a spa robe and get comfortable under the soft sheets and blankets before we come back to begin your facial.

After securing your hair with a spa wrap, we will begin your CryoFacial with a double cleanse that will start the detox process. You will notice a huge difference in your skin just from our very first cleansing step with Sunshine Botanicals Pre-Cleanse & Detox. The difference in just this step will blow your mind. We then apply Cryo gel containing hyaluronic acid and perform the 20 minutes of cold cryotherapy to the face, one side of the face at a time. The temperature and technique are adjusted to your needs and comfort level. You can expect it to be very cold, but most people say it feels very relaxing even though it is quite cold. Always make sure to ask questions if you are unsure of something. We want you to have an amazing experience.

Once we are finished with the cold part of the CryoFacial, we massage the skin and perform gentle lymphatic drainage movements before moving on the rest of the detoxifying and nutrient infusing portions of the facial. You can expect to feel relaxed and rejuvenated by the end of your CryoFacial.

Does It Have Any Side Effects?

There are no negative side-effects to receiving a CryoFacial and you can continue life as normal immediately after. We do recommend letting the skin absorb the serums for the rest of the day instead of applying makeup, but applying makeup will not hurt your skin.

The only negative side-effects we have heard of from a CryoFacial is from places where they are not performing a True CryoFacial or where untrained or unlicensed personnel are trying to perform these treatments.

What a CryoFacial is NOT

There is a lot of confusion about what a CryoFacial really is. You will see a lot of CryoFacials on Groupon, for example, where the technician is not a licensed esthetician and they are not using the proper equipment or techniques. The number one rule for seeking out any kind of facial is that your technician is a Licensed Esthetician. Estheticians dedicate their careers to knowing everything they can about the skin and skin health, so they are going to know how to best address your specific skin needs. They will also have a better idea if this is not the right kind of facial for you and will recommend something that will help more with your specific needs.

A CryoFacial is also not just spraying cold gas on your face. Most of these machines are getting way too cold to be safe for the face. When you drop the temperature below four degrees Celsius, you begin to kill fat cells. That is exactly what we do NOT want to happen in the face. Reduction in precious fat pads in the face is the reason people turn to filler. We do not ever want to burn this lovely fat in our faces!

Four degrees Celsius is just above the freezing point of water, which brings us to this next point: using ice cubes is also a big no no when trying to perform a CryoFacial. Ice cubes are too cold and can lead to damaging your fat pads.

Those who have had any recent ablative facial treatments like IPL or Microneedling will need to wait until their skin is fully healed before having a CryoFacial done. Having too many corrective treatments done on the skin in a very short amount of time can inhibit or reverse the positive effects of these treatments, so we must wait until your skin is back to normal.

If you have had recent botox or fillers, the rule is to wait 3-4 weeks after Botox and 4-6 weeks after filler so that we do not move these substances into an unintended area. CryoFacials are gentle, but these substances have a tendency to migrate if we do not allow them the proper time to fuse into your tissues.

Recent surgeries or cancers will require a doctor’s note to have a CryoFacial, and we do not recommend this for anyone who is currently sick. If you have any questions concerning if a CryoFacial is a good fit for you, please feel free to call or email us, or schedule a consultation.

Preparing for and Maintaining a CryoFacial

We recommend that you drink plenty of water at least two days before coming in for your CryoFacial. Hydration is incredibly important for healthy skin as it aids in the detox process allowing for higher quality collagen to form. Make sure you have not had any recent Botox, fillers, sunburn, or ablative facial treatments. It is also important to arrive without any makeup on so that we have plenty of time for your treatment and do not have to spend extra time removing makeup. Please also make sure to fill out any paperwork in your confirmation email ahead of time so that all of our time together can be focused on you and your treatment. We love to be 100% prepared so we can give you the royal treatment all around.

Your esthetician will give you more detailed instructions on what to do after your CryoFacial, but we generally recommend letting your skin rest from makeup for the rest of the day. This is not absolutely necessary, but it does help your skin if you allow the serums to work their magic for a while without interfering. It is also recommended to stay out of the sun to allow the skin to rest. Your esthetician will recommend a home care routine to maximize the results from your CryoFacial and will recommend another time to receive another one to keep your results compounding. Each CryoFacial’s results build on the last one.

The longevity of your results will depend on how well you follow your after care, what products you use at home, and how well you take care of your own health. Eating healthy, exercising, drinking water, managing stress, and getting the proper amount of sleep that your body needs are all vitally important to the health of your skin. It is after all your largest organ. It will always show you what is going on inside your body, which is why we care so much about a holistic approach to skincare.

These relaxing yet powerful facials are an excellent addition to any skincare routine whether you are just getting started or you are used to taking great care of your skin. Everyone can benefit from CryoFacials.
